The Ultimate Sustainable Holiday Gift Guide
Finally, I put together the ultimate sustainable holiday gift guide for you. 🙂 Over the years I’ve become increasingly conscious about my carbon footprint on the planet and it’s become really important to me to make daily attempts to make more eco-friendly choices. I’m not the type to judge others for being wasteful but I do want to share knowledge I gather with others so we can collectively make the world a better place.
Did you know?
- Americans throw away about 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Years? The extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage, or about 1 million extra tons per week.
- If every American family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields!
- If everyone purchased just one used item instead of new this year, we would save nearly six billion pounds of carbon emissions.
- The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one card less, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper. (Source: Stanford)
Tips For A More Sustainable Holiday Season
- Use reusable wrapping paper or bags. My family started re-using chic bags, tins, and boxes for gifts occasionally and it’s made so much less of a mess and more importantly – waste.
- Buy seed paper to use for gift cards and thank you cards so they can plant some greenery after:) BotanicalPaperworks.com , Paper Source, and Etsy, have a lot of cute seed paper cards.
- Gift experiences and subscriptions this holiday season! Maybe a Disneyland Annual Pass, sports tickets, concert tickets, music festival tickets, comedy club tickets, membership passes – maybe to a health spa/gym or Massage Envy, Hulu, Netflix, something that they’ll cherish and remember.
You can read more tips on how to be more green this holiday season on Stanford’s website here and Colorado here.
