Art Basel Miami
Art Basel Miami is one of my favorite times of the year. I love when friends from all over the world come together to experience culture, work together, inspire one another, support each other, and create unforgettable memories. It’s the most fulfilling way to end the year.
Then after the whirlwind week, we return home for the holidays and plan out our goals for the following year. I think a lot of great ideas are born at events like Art Basel because we are inspired by our experiences with other people and are able to bounce ideas off of one another to make something truly great and impactful.THE ART
The art at Art Basel Miami this year was vibrant, loud, and relayed strong, powerful messages. There was a lot of art that was inspired by love, sex, culture, and politics. From furniture to paintings to photos to sculptures – there is something for everyone at Art Basel Miami. My favorite exhibitions were UNTITLED, ART, Design Miami, and the Juxtapoz Clubhouse. And if you aren’t that into art, but love to party – Miami Art Basel has that department covered too.
My favorite nights started out in Wynwood at No Commission which is run by Swizz Beatz and sponsored by Bacardi, who provided an amazing open bar. Taking place at Soho Studios in Wynwood, Swizzy’s No Commission art and music experience showcased 30 artists from around the world and included musical performances and discussion panels. Swizz is starting a movement and dedicating his time to educating artists, discussing social responsibility, and the impact of social media and the roles creatives play in today’s culture. Alicia Keys and Swizz are my new favorite creatives because they both live with so much purpose.
The motive behind No Commission is what originally got my attention because it is an event that is by the people and for the people. At No Commission, chosen artists display and sell their work at Soho Studios and no commission is taken from the sales. And if you are able to get through the line, you get to see the top music artists for free. We saw 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Swizz Beatz, A$AP Rocky, and Busta Rhymes in 1 night. It was legendary. We all were nonstop laughing and dancing. I was elated. Lucky for us, we were with people who were working the event – shoutout @bukunmigrace! <3
