Renting a Car in Puglia: Your Key to Freedom & Flexibility

The best way to experience Puglia’s dreamy beaches, charming hill towns, and hidden gems is by car. Public transportation is limited, and having your own wheels gives you total freedom to explore at your own pace — especially the off-the-beaten-path spots that make this region so special.

I recommend booking through this reliable car rental service for reliable service and great rates. Whatever you do, avoid random car brokers in Puglia at all costs because there are a lot of scammers. Stick with legit companies to keep your trip smooth and stress-free.

Day 2: Gallipoli — Pearl of the Ionian Sea

We started by driving all the way south first—about a 2-3 hour drive from Matera to Gallipoli—to get the longer haul out of the way. Then, we settled into the beautiful beach town of Gallipoli, known as the “Pearl of the Ionian Sea.” Coming from California, where we’re used to road trips lasting 5+ hours, this drive was easy, breezy, and beautiful. Therefore, we recommend doing it early on so you can relax and enjoy the rest of your trip without long drives looming ahead.

Check into your hotel — either Palazzo Presta or Palazzo Flora, both stylish stays with authentic southern Italian charm and created by the same brilliant owner.

Day 7: Ostuni & Alberobello

The White City of Puglia

Perched high on a hill with panoramic views of olive groves and the Adriatic Sea, Ostuni is one of Puglia’s most iconic and photogenic towns. Known as La Città Bianca (The White City), it’s famous for its whitewashed buildings, winding alleyways, and sun-bleached stone that glows golden at sunset.

Spending a few hours here feels like stepping into a Mediterranean dream — think stone staircases, hidden courtyards, and little doors painted every shade of blue and green. Get lost on purpose, pop into local artisan shops, and snap pics at every turn.

Alberobello Italy trullos travel guide & itinerary - amy marietta

Visit Alberobello — The Storybook Town of Trulli

After exploring the dreamy white alleys of Ostuni, enjoy a scenic 45-minute drive inland to Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that feels like stepping into a storybook. This enchanting town is world-famous for its trulli — unique whitewashed, cone-roofed stone homes originally built in the 14th century by local farmers. Today, many of the trulli now house artisan boutiques, cafés, and wine bars, so take your time browsing, sipping, and soaking up the whimsical vibes.

One fascinating fact about the trulli: they were constructed without mortar so they could be quickly dismantled when tax collectors came around — no house, no taxes. Today, most have been carefully restored with mortar to preserve their charm and stability, while honoring Alberobello’s unique architectural heritage.

The town’s compact size makes it perfect for a 2–3 hour visit — ideal for wandering cobblestone streets, shopping handmade goods, and soaking up the whimsical atmosphere before continuing your journey.

What to do in Alberobello:

  • Explore the unique trulli houses — iconic cone-roofed stone homes
  • Wander through the cobblestone lanes of Rione Monti – the trulli-lined district
  • Visit a traditional artisan shop making handcrafted ceramic whistles
  • Snap the iconic rooftop photo from the panoramic terrace
  • Enjoy a refreshing spritz or gelato while soaking in the fairytale atmosphere
  • Book a guided tour to learn the history of Alberobello & trullis

One of my favorite moments? Stumbling into a tiny trullo shop run by an older artisan who handcrafts ceramic whistles — each one with its own personality and sound. It was such a sweet, unexpected glimpse into Puglia’s traditions.

Then drive 30 minutes to Polignano a Mare and check into your hotel — we stayed at Covo dei Saraceni.
